How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Metal Beard Shape
Growing a metal beard will take time and dedication, but it’ll totally be worth it in the end. Here is how.
1. Grow A Long Beard
The typical look of a metal rocker is a long beard and generally long hair or a bald look to go with it. The defining characteristic is the length, so we aim for a beard at least three inches long or more (even up to eight inches for some performers!) Taking daily supplements will help you grow a rich, full beard from the start.
2. Brush The Beard Daily
As you are growing out your beard, it’s important that you take care of it. We want a wild, rockin’ look, but that doesn’t mean your beard should be hard and flaky. Use beard butter and a brush to keep your hair hydrated and smooth throughout the tour. We recommend lathering your beard with butter and then brushing it at least twice a day.
3. Style Or Wild? It’s Your Choice.
Whether you style your beard like Kerry King or let it run wild like Scott Ian is up to you. If you are going for an unruly look, you don’t have to do much other than just let it grow. However, if the style is more your thing, you should consider keeping it trimmed up and groomed. You can even consider adding braiding or hair ties for a unique effect.
4. Take Care Of That Hair
The final step you want to do is to ensure you are taking care of your facial hair. Shampoo your beard daily so that it gets the nutrients that it needs. Then use a beard softener formula to loosen up the facial hairs so that it remains soft to the touch, regardless of how unruly you let it go.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect metal beard:
- Beard Growth Supplements: Promotes a luscious beard with all-natural and healthy ingredients.
- Beard Brush: Professional brush is great for taming your facial hair.
- The Trendsetter Grooming Kit: Includes shampoo, beard softener, and beard serum to keep your beard looking it’s absolute best.

How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Friendly Mutton Chops Beard
To grow a friendly mutton chops beard, you’ll need to have a mustache that connects to the sideburns, which is the main difference between this style and the traditional mutton chops beard. Here’s what you’ll need to do to achieve this style.
1. Grow out your facial hair.
If you’re starting from a clean-shaven face, start by growing all your facial hair out to at least half an inch. If you have a hard time growing consistent facial hair or if you struggle with dry skin, use a beard oil that contains natural vitamins and essential oils to moisturize your skin and hair. This will promote healthy hair growth and prevent patchy or dry facial hair.
2. Shave the areas around your chin, neck, and cheeks.
When you have a good amount of growth, shave away the hair around your below your cheeks, using a shaping tool to get clean lines around your cheeks. Then remove the stubble below your neck. Finally, shave your chin, leaving only the sideburns and mustache. Be sure to use a safety razor and shave lube to prevent knicks, cuts, and razor burn.
3. Make sure your mustache touches the sideburns.
The key to differentiating this look from the traditional mutton chops is to keep a mustache that touches your sideburns. You can trim your mustache if it’s too long around your lips, but make sure the sides blend into the sideburns.
4. Brush and style it as it grows.
If you’re planning to grow your facial hair out beyond half an inch or so, be sure to brush your beard daily. You can also use trimming scissors to remove stray hairs and finish up with beard butter for soft, smooth facial hair.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect friendly mutton chops:

- Wild Willies Shave Lube: to get a clean, close shave.

The Thick A La Souvarov Beard
This man combines the A La Souvarov look with or friendly mutton chops to get a blend of the two.
How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect A La Souvarov Beard
The A La Souvarov Beard differs from mutton chops by connecting the mustache in a way that gives it curved lines up into the sideburns. Traditionally it consists of thin lines, although you can make the sideburns a bit thicker if you prefer.
1. Grow out a full beard of at least half an inch.
Start by growing out a full beard of at least half an inch. This will give you a good base to work with. To get healthy, thick and soft facial hair, use a product that stimulates growth, such as a beard elixir. This will give you thicker, stronger, and healthier feeling skin and well-nourished facial hair.
2. Use a shaping tool to curve your mustache into your sideburns.
You’re going to want to use a shaping tool to help you achieve the curves that define this look. Hold the shaping tool against your cheek and shave along the curved edge, making sure to connect the sideburns to the mustache. This will give you the “top” portion of the beard.
3. Remove the hair below your sideburns.
Unlike mutton chops, your sideburns won’t go all the way down. You want your sideburns to be about the same width as your mustache, and to curve slightly up towards your ears. Bring the shaping tool down your face and use the curved edge to achieve the “bottom” portion of the beard. Then, remove all the hair below the sideburns with a razor and shave lube.
4. Use a beard butter to maintain healthy facial hair.
After you shower and wash your face, use a beard butter to get rid of coarse texture and improve the appearance of your facial hair.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect A La Souvarov Beard:
- The Edge Beard Shaping Tool: to get curved sideburns that blend into your mustache.
- Wild Willies Shave Lube: to get a clean, close shave.
- Wild Willies Beard Butter - Cool Mint: to soften your beard hair.

Here’s a shorter, yet still very obvious, version of his Dali mustache.
How to Grow and Maintain The Dali Mustache
The most important part of growing a Dali mustache is the product you use to style it. Follow these tips to imitate this famous look.
1. Grow out your mustache.
Start by growing out your mustache to at least the point where it starts to fall below your lipline. At this point, you can begin to “train” your mustache by using a comb and beard butter to style and pull the sides outward and slightly upward.
2. Start styling your mustache outward and upward.
After several months of growth, you’ll be able to split your mustache to either side and style the hair with a slight upward curl. As it gets longer, you may need to use beeswax to get the shape to stay.
3. Maintain the style.
To maintain this style, we recommend using a grooming kit that contains a comb, scissors, and a safety razor. You can use the scissors to trim the ends of your mustache and keep it at your desired length. Use the razor to keep the rest of your face clean-shaven and keep the focus on your mustache. Finally, you’ll want to use the comb daily to style your mustache.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get The Dali look:
- Wild Willies Beard Butter - Cool Mint: to style and train your mustache upward.
- The Expert Grooming Kit: to trim, style, and maintain your mustache.
- Shave Lube: for shaving off the rest of your facial hair.

How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Franz Josef Beard
Growing a Franz Josef beard is very similar to growing mutton chops, but you’ll trim it slightly differently.
1. Grow out your facial hair.
If you’re starting from a clean-shaven face, start by growing all your facial hair out to at least half an inch. If your facial hair grows slowly, use a beard oil that contains natural vitamins and essential oils to moisturize your skin and hair. This will promote healthy hair growth and prevent patchy or dry facial hair. You can also add growth supplements to your daily vitamin routine.
2. Shape the top half of your beard.
When you have a good amount of growth, use a shaping tool to create the triangle shape that connects your mustache and sideburns. Using a razor or trimmer, shave a straight line down your sideburns, all the way down to your jawline.
Then, comb your mustache slightly down and out to angle away from your face. Use the straight edge of the shaping tool to create a 45-degree angle connecting your mustache to the bottom of your sideburns. Using your razor or trimmer, remove any leftover hair within the space.
3. Shape the bottom half of your beard.
Next, you’ll want to remove all the hair from your chin, leaving only the angled portion that creates the line from your mustache to your sideburns. Then remove the stubble below your neck. Always use a safety razor and shave lube to prevent knicks, cuts, and razor burn.
4. Brush and style it as it grows.
If you’re planning to grow your facial hair out beyond half an inch or so, be sure to brush your beard daily, directing your mustache hair down and out so it blends into the lines of your sideburns. You can also use trimming scissors to remove stray hairs and finish up with beard butter for soft, smooth facial hair.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect Franz Josef beard:

- The Edge Beard Shaping Tool: to achieve straight sideburns and angled lines.
- Wild Willies Shave Lube: to get a clean, close shave.
- Beard Butter + Beard Balm Combo Set: to maintain soft, healthy facial hair.

How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Heavy Stubble Beard
Achieving the heavy stubble beard look is probably the easiest beard style to achieve and maintain. Follow these simple steps to get healthy stubble.
1. If you are starting from a clean-shaven face, let your beard hair grow for about a week.
Heavy stubble is somewhere in the 0.25-0.5 inch range, which should take about a week to achieve for most men. If you already have a beard, simply use your trimmer with a #2 or #3 guard to trim it up.
2. Maintain your stubble by keeping it trimmed up.
There’s a fine line between an intentional 5 o’clock shadow and looking like you just forgot to shave for a while. Keep your stubble in check by using your trimmer with one of the lowest guards (usually a 0 or 1) every 2-3 days.
3. Keep your hair and skin healthy with a good skincare routine.
Make sure to cleanse your face daily with a facial cleanser and use a moisturizer to prevent itchy, dry skin. Follow up with this beard scruff tamer to keep your stubble feeling soft.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect [TYPE]:
- Wild Willies True Cleanse: to keep your face clean and free from pore-clogging bacteria.
- Wild Willies Beard Scruff Tamer: to moisturize skin and prevent itchiness.
