How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Full Beard Shape
Growing out your facial hair takes time, especially if you're starting from scratch. But the process of growing out a full beard is pretty straightforward:
1. Let your hair grow.
This one seems pretty obvious, but you have to let your hair grow for a period of time. Beard hair tends to grow a little bit faster than the hair on your scalp, and you can expect your beard to grow by an inch every 2-4 months.
2. Use the right products.
The difference between a good-looking beard and a patchy beard or unkempt look comes down to the beard products you use. We recommend cleansing your face daily with a facial cleanser or beard wash to keep hair follicles and pores from becoming clogged and using a quality beard oil to keep your beard hair soft and tame.
As you're in the beginning stages of growing a full beard, you probably don't need a beard brush, but as it gets longer, this may be a worthwhile investment, too.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get this facial hair style:
- Wild Willies True Cleanse Daily Face Wash: to keep your skin clean and free from clogged pores
- Wild Willies Original Beard Oil: to keep your beard looking smooth
- BONUS: Wild Willies Beard Growth Supplements: for those who are just a little bit impatient and want to speed up the growth process.
3. Keep it defined.
You don't want a scruffy beard while you're trying to grow it out, so be sure to keep it trimmed daily or every other day, depending on how quickly your hair grows. Be sure to shave your neck line and cheek lines to keep your growing beard looking well-groomed.
4. Trim it up as needed.
Yes, you need to let your beard grow, but you also need to keep your facial hair trimmed in order to get the shape and style you want. This means trimming up any stray hairs that have gone awry, and maintaining the overall oval shape of the beard. You may need to keep it shorter in some places, like around your cheeks, and longer around the chin. The Edge Beard Shaping Tool is a simple but effective tool that will give you precise lines around your cheeks and neckline and will help you trim up the sideburns and maintain symmetry while your beard grows.

How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Garibaldi Beard Shape
Growing a Garibaldi beard can take a long time but you'll be happily rewarded with the results these beard types have to offer.
- Grow a giant beard.
The first thing you must do: grow a ridiculously large beard. Garibaldi beards don't have to be massive, but most men prefer their beard hairs on the longer side when growing this fashion out. Try a beard boost serum to promote growth and thicken your beard. You can also try a derma roller to get some of those patchy areas.
2. Trim and style.
As your beard grows out, you will want to trim back the hair so it stays uniform all around. You can use beard scissors, or use one of the bigger guards on your trimmer. If you want the beard narrow towards the chin, let it grow longer towards the chin while trimming up the sides. You can use a beard brush to direct the hair downward. Or, you can let it stay wide just like Giuseppe used to wear it.
- Don't Stop Growing
Generally speaking, most people will grow this style in the 6 to 8-inch range, but that doesn't mean you have to. Some men have long, beautiful Garibaldi beards, and you can be one of them. Grab yourself a bottle of Wild Willies Beard Boost Serum and the Beard Straightener - V.2, and you'll be off to the races!
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect Garibaldi beard:

How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Circle Beard Shape
You’ll need to grow your facial hair out for 2-4 weeks, depending on how long you want the beard to look.
1. Shave the hair around your cheeks and on your neck, but keep the area around your mouth.
Once you have a few weeks of growth you’ll want to use a razor to shave off the areas around your cheeks and below your neck, but keep the area around your mouth and chin intact. Always use a shave gel to prevent razor burn. If you’re going for a clean look, you’ll likely need to shave these areas daily.
2. Trim up the area around your mouth and chin.
With your beard trimmer, use an attachment size just a little bit longer than your desired length. Outline the sides, with about a half-inch indent from each corner. You can use grooming scissors to get more precision, and even create a gradient look by trimming the top part shorter than the part around your chin.
3. Always moisturize.
No matter what you’re doing with your beard, you should always moisturize your face to keep your skin healthy. A good daily moisturizer is a must-have in your grooming routine.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect circle beard:

- Wild Willies Shave Lube: for daily shaving to prevent razor burn

How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Sea Captain Beard Shape
Follow these steps and use the right tools along the way and you, too, can get this coveted retirement beard, maybe even before you retire!
1. Stimulate growth.
A sea captain's beard looks best when it’s long and accompanied by a full mustache. If your beard hair tends to grow slowly, you’re going to need to refrain from trimming it for a few months. In the meantime, you can take a beard growth supplement or use a growth serum that contains ingredients like biotin, vitamin E, vitamin B5, and vitamin A to speed up the growth process.
2. Maintain the sides.
Once your beard has grown out 1-2 inches, you’ll need to start trimming up the sides so you don’t end up with wings coming out of your cheeks. Use a shaping tool or place your fingers up against the sides of your face. Gently push the tool or your hand inward, and use your trimmer to remove the hair that peeks out. This will leave you with shorter, trimmed hair on the sides while the bottom part continues to grow longer.
3. Don’t trim the sides of your mustache.
As your hair begins to grow out, you’ll want to keep your mustache trimmed so the hair doesn’t grow over your lip, but you should let the sides go. A good sea captain’s beard starts with a mustache that grows down into the beard itself. Feel free to trim some flyaways and maintain the area above your upper lip, but let those sides get long.
4. Brush your beard and use beard butter daily.
With a beard this long, brushing it daily is a must. While you may be going for the “months at sea” (or just the “I’m retired”) look, you should still brush it to keep it from getting tangled. Use a brush with boar bristles that will guide your beard hairs downward when you brush. Then, follow up with a beard butter that will fight split ends and leave your beard hair feeling softer. Rub the beard butter in your hands and then massage it into your beard, starting at the root and moving downward.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect sea captain’s beard:
- Wild Willies Beard Growth Kit: to help speed up the growth process
- The Edge Beard Shaping Tool: use to aid in trimming the sides of your beard
- Wild Willies Beard Brush: to keep your beard tangle-free
- Wild Willies Original Beard Butter: massage into the beard starting at the roots, use daily

How to Grow and Maintain the Perfect Van Dyke Beard Shape
The Van Dyke beard style isn’t too difficult to groom and style, but you will want to take some steps to ensure the best look possible.
1. Grow out a goatee.
The Van Dyke is a modified goatee that can or cannot be connected; the choice is yours. You will want to grow a nice thick mustache and then some arrangement of beard hairs on your chin. If your facial hairs don’t grow out rich and full, try some beard growth gummy supplements and beard boost serum to avoid any patchiness on your face.
2. As the goatee grows, shape it accordingly.
Once a solid goatee is formed, you will want to shape the Van Dyke style by shaving any unwanted hair from your jawline, cheeks, and sideburns. Typically the style isn’t connected from your lower facial hairs to your mustache, but you can keep those hairs if you desire. The main thing to remember here is to focus on growing a nice narrow beard from your chin and a full mustache that you can manipulate later.
3. Style your mustache and facial hairs.
Now comes the fun part. You can style the mustache and facial hair any way that you want. We recommend using beard balm and a brush to help shape the facial hairs the way you want them to. When it comes to the mustache, you can have it pointing downwards, flaring out to the sides, or curling around back towards your nose.
4. Maintain a clean, shaven look.
Finally, you just need to maintain the look of your new Van Dyke beard by styling and shaving back the areas that you don’t want the hair to grow. You can pick up a grooming kit with everything you need to cut, trim, style, and shape your new look daily.
Here are some of our favorite product recommendations to help you get the perfect Van Dyke beard:
