11 Reasons Why You Need a Beard for the Cold Months
1. A Beard Is a Man’s Winter Fur
The science is out and it says beards keep men warmer. According to Dr. Anthony Rossi, a dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medical College, beards aid in thermoregulation. Beards can keep the head warm too — so warm that some biologists believe genetics cursed men with Male Pattern Baldness to compensate. Studies have shown a correlation between hairy chins and bald pates. Yes, if you’re bald, your naked hairline acts as a heatsink for your face muff.
2. Grow a Fuller Beard for the Cold, Get Healthier Skin
Aside from trapping heat, your beard will also pack moisture in. This is particularly important during the winter months because the dry atmosphere can suck the life out of your epidermis. Always remember to moisturize to take advantage of your beard’s ability to keep things a little humid, since the chilly air will still sap and dry the skin under those beard hairs. It’s best to use beard oil now and then during the season.
3. An Ice Beard Will Make You Look Rugged
Imagine locks of your beard encased in tufts of white snow while you forge a path against an unforgiving landscape. Yes, you’ll look badass if you’re sold on the allure of the rugged frontiersman and you fancy yourself an adventurer.
4. A Beard Blocks the Sun’s Rays
You heard that right. Your face foliage gives your mug some shade from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Studies show that a beard can keep as much as 95% of the rays out of the areas it covers. It’s safe to say your beard protects you from sunburns and skin cancer to a certain degree.
5. Your Beard Will Keep Stave Off the Chill Wind
Nothing prepares you for the cold winter wind hitting you in the face. But if you’re in the late beard growth stages, your face mane will just shake off the chilling effect and allow you to soldier on against the crappy weather.
6. Your Beard Will Protect You from Allergens and Microbes
The dry atmosphere of winter is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and allergens — the littlest dastardly critters that can turn a nice sexy man into a disgusting snot machine. Your beard hairs act like filters, keeping those microbes out of your mouth. By doing so, your facial hairs actually stave off gum and throat infections. Not only do you save money from razors and shaving cream by not shaving, you also save on medical bills. Now, that’s certainly more reason to invest in beard growth products months before the cold hits.
7. The Aftertaste of Food and Drink Lasts Longer
A lot of men refer to their beards as soup catchers for an obvious reason. Random foodstuffs do find their way into your beard follicles since the longer beard hairs will dip into what you’re eating. This sounds like a dirty and unseemly thing to like, but imagine still getting a whiff of that scotch or that gin from your mustache hours after you’ve enjoyed it. The lingering memory of food and drink will sustain you as you barrel on through the cold.
8. Your Beard Will Make You Look Younger
If you’ve been paying attention to all those skin care commercials, you’re bound to notice how some of them blame the harsh elements like the cold and the sun for wrinkles and dry, aging skin. And as we’ve pointed out, your beard shields you from both. All in all, your beard’s barrier keeps your skin looking fresh and supple — preserving the boyish glow of your looks for many more winters to come.
9. You’ll Definitely Amp Your Sex Appeal During the Cold Season
A researcher, Mr. Nigel Barber, published a historical study covering British mustache and beard fashions in from 1842 to 1971 and linked the increase of the popularity of facial hair in a marriage market where single men outnumber women. This hints at what bearded men have known all along: man manes maketh a sexy man.

Because we all should know what it takes to be the best-groomed man.
Another researcher, Tamsin Saxton, a Senior Psychology Lecturer at Northumbria University in Newcastle, performed an experiment with co-workers from her department. They asked 20 men and 20 women to rate the attractiveness and dominance of six men who were videotaped as they let their facial hairs grow. The participants rated the men who grew beards higher than the men who can’t grow beards.
10. You’re Instantly Ready for the Holiday Festivities
The fuller and longer beard styles for older men resonate strongly during the last months of the year because it’ll make everyone connect them with a certain sleigh-driving, OG bearded badass in red. If you’re not into Christmas that much, you can still find your part in the celebration — heck, even The Grinch sports a little scruff.
11. Your Facial Hair Will Give You Hours of Entertainment
Winter often spells boredom, especially when bad weather snows you in. Who the f*ck likes sitting around watching snow (that you’ll eventually have to shovel) pile up? Just look at the silver lining and take the time to master the fine art of beard grooming while you’re toasty and warm indoors. Take out the renegade silver hairs and learn how to shape your beard or how to use beard oil or beard balm. That’s certainly one way to keep yourself entertained.
